Genesius of Rome
Died: c.303 Canonized: Feast Day: August 25 Patron Saint of: actors, epilepsy, printers, secretaries, stenographers, theatrical performers, musicians Genesius was a comedian that performed in Rome during the 4th Century. The leader of a theatrical group, Genesius was performing one day before the Emperor Diocletian a skit that ridiculed Christian rites. During this comedy act, Genesius pretended to receive the Sacrament of Baptism. When the water was poured on him he proclaimed himself a Christian. Diocletian at first enjoyed the realistic play, but finding Genesius to be in earnest, ordered him to be tortured and then beheaded. [ Catholic Encyclopedia ] |
