Tithe
There are only 2 instances in the Bible where testing God is not a bad thing. The first is found in Isaiah 1:18 which deals with forgiveness . . . He basically says repent, put me to the test, see if I don't forgive you. Do you know the other? It's found in Malachi, where He challenges us to test Him with our tithe of 10%! "Bring all the tithes [meaning the full 10%] into the storehouse, that there may be meat in my house, and try me in this, saith the Lord: if I open not unto you the flood-gates of heaven, and pour you out a blessing even to abundance." [Malachi 3:10]
Building Fund
After Hurricane Katrina, our population increased expanding our parish needs. An elementary school has been started with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades. A new school building and more office space is needed to accomodate our new growth.
Gifts to the Poor
A gift is a contribution above and beyond your tithe. The Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraph 2447, says "The works of mercy are charitable actions by which we come to the aid of our neighbor in his spiritual and bodily necessities. Instructing, advising, consoling, comforting are spiritual works of mercy, as are forgiving and bearing wrongs patiently. The corporal works of mercy consist especially in feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless, clothing the naked, visiting the sick and imprisoned, and burying the dead. Among all these, giving alms to the poor is one of the chief witnesses to fraternal charity: it is also a work of justice pleasing to God: He who has two coats, let him share with him who has none and he who has food must do likewise. But give for alms those things which are within; and behold, everything is clean for you. If a brother or sister is ill-clad and in lack of daily food, and one of you says to them, "Go in peace, be warmed and filled," without giving them the things needed for the body, what does it profit?"
